XR - Reserva 2020

Founded in 1858 in the Rioja Alavesa, Marqués de Riscal stands as one of Spain’s most iconic wineries, blending Bordeaux-inspired tradition with a spirit of innovation deeply rooted in Rioja. The XR cuvée originates from a historic cellar tradition: between 1869 and 1964, the cellar masters would mark certain barrels with the letters “XR” written in chalk, identifying wines of exceptional quality that displayed unique character and outstanding potential.

The XR Reserva continues this legacy, crafted mainly from Tempranillo and Graciano grapes grown on calcareous and clay soils. It expresses remarkable depth, freshness and minerality, refined by careful ageing in oak barrels — a true homage to Marqués de Riscal’s timeless craftsmanship.

Appearance: Intense black cherry color with great depth and minimal signs of evolution.

Nose: Very expressive, with notes of liquorice, cinnamon, and black pepper, complemented by a subtle touch of cask aging, revealing complexity and ripe, concentrated fruit.

Palate: Fresh and smooth, with a solid structure and silky tannins. The long, persistent finish offers balsamic hints of exceptional quality.

Food Matches: Pairs well with ham, mild cheeses, gently spiced casseroles, pulse-based dishes, poultry, red meat, grills, and roasts.
